In Nakuru, prepaid water is increasingly becoming a succes. Several dozens of prepaid public stand pipes were introduced and people are mostly very satisfied. Formerly, water points were open only for a few hours per day which led to long waiting lines. The new prepaid water points are open 24/7 and waiting lines are history now. Water service provider NAWASSCO is also happy with the prepaid meters: they have a full online insight in water consumption and this helps extremely much to reduce non-revenue water.
Nawassco now wants to scale up and Maji Milele won a tender for 50 new prepaid water points. The first water point (see picture) was just installed and the remaining 49 water points are scheduled for August and September 2015.
