Our intervention in Uyoma (and Naya) is very different from all other locations. Instead of installing prepaid meters we have taken over the full management from the local water committee. The total population to be served is 58,000 people. The project (total value is 2.9 million euro) is not only about prepaid meters, but it also has big sanitation component and more importantly it is about POPM (Public Ownership, Private Management). Maji Milele does all this together with the Siaya county government and the NGOs Dorcas and Northgem. The partnership is developing very well so far (it is October 2018). All partners are keen on success, meaning the water scheme operations become economically viable (that was never the case) while the score on KPI (key performance indicators) should be better and better every year. All partners hope to proof that POPM with prepaid meters in place might become the way to go.for rural water schemes.
